Due to the difficulties caused by COVID-19, the LOWI School will not be operating during the 2020-2021 school year. It is our hope that an immersion program will be available for the community in the near future.
Lakȟótiyapi Okáȟtaŋ Wičhóičhaǧe Inc. (LOWI) School is a new Lakota immersion school in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. Our school will initially take on one class of 20 Kindergarteners in the Fall of 2018. In Fall 2019, our Kindergarteners will progress to first grade and we will welcome 20 new students.
Our school provides all instruction (including math, science, and other subjects) in Lakota and will provide students with the exposure that is necessary to learn a second language to fluency. LOWI School will strictly limit English usage and encourage the use of Lakota both during class and recreational periods. To do this, exchanges between teachers, staff, and students will happen in Lakota. This is something to be grateful for. Lé líla wóphila tȟáŋka héčha ye.
